-Update 7/15/14-
In view of the fact that writing this review I have establish zero issues. There have been a few minor updates already pushed out. I am still pleased with this device.

-Original Review-

Is it worth an upgrade…

-My Actual Testing Numbers-
Antutu Benchmark Score:
My Nexus 7 (2013) – 21050
My Samsung Galaxy S4 – 28463
Asus MeMO Pad 7 – 33050 – hit as much as 43+FPS in pool graphic

Its quick, the screen is not HD which you already know but it is IPS and it does look excellent, very wide in view angles. Interface is nice and fluid, it boots up quick. Clean looking back cover, nice looking front. At its contemporary price I reckon it would be hard to find anything quicker with more bang for the buck.

Tested, Netflix, in house network video playback, BOINC (Seti at home, heavy number crunching), Dead Trigger 2, Asphault 7…no issues at all. The Intel SOC does very well.

The terrible? I ordered it for my wife, so I had to hand it over.

I have in view of the fact that ordered one for myself it should be here today.

Solid Tablet, July 29, 2014

Verified Buy(What’s this?)
This is my first Intel based Android tablet. So far I am somewhat impressed.

This tablet is certainly a relative of the original nexus 7 (from 2012). I used to own the 2012 Nexus 7, and this device looks like it has slightly smaller bezels, but the same button place and speaker place. It has the same silver trim around the edges, but no rubberized back. The front-facing camera is also positioned slightly to the aptly of center (like the 2013 Nexus 7).

There is some light leak at the top of the screen, but it is usually not noticeable.

The early Android setup process is a small customized. You do your predictable things such as logging in with your Google account. You also get the opportunity to make an Asus account during setup for help, registration, and 5gb of cloud storage.

At the completion of your Asus account setup it says “Asus registe success”, which is a typo. They left out the “r” in “register”.

On first boot, there is a 111 mb system update available. When complete, this tablet is running Android 4.4.2, which is only two very minor revisions behind what Google is shipping on Nexus devices aptly now. It is also the same version shipping on the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4.

The screen isn’t a super high resolution screen. It is 1280×800, which is the same as the 2012 Nexus 7. The Asus website claims it is HD, but I guess I have been disfigured by “Full HD” screens at 1920×1200 resolution, like the 2013 Nexus 7 and the 2560×1600 Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4. The ppi (pixels per inch) on this device is 216, even as the 2013 Nexus 7 is 323 and the Galaxy Tab Pro is 359.

The screen and icons look a small fuzzy.

The Asus website says this device runs the “64-bit Intel Atom Z3745 processor (up to 1.86GHz, quad-core)”. I run Geekbench (which confirmed this processor runs at 1.33Ghz up to 1.86Ghz) on all of my family’s devices for evaluation purposes and I am really impressed here. With Power Reduction Mode off, this tablet scored a 757 single core score and a 2401 multicore score. In evaluation, my 2013 Nexus 7 scored a 590 single core/1475 multicore. My Nexus 5 scored a 826 single core/2463 multicore. The Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 scored a 859 single core/2013 multicore. Finally, my wife’s iPad Air scored a 1478 single core/2683 multicore. So basically, this Intel processor stacks up pretty nicely.

Regarding the Asus Zen UI: It has a pleasant light blue and white theme in the dropdown notification shade. The skin has round toggles like Samsung’s newest iteration of TouchWiz (on the Galaxy S5). The app tray looks like all non-Nexus, non-bleeding devices, meaning it doesn’t have the Google Experience app tray. It has a slightly modified Android 4.4 app tray. If you have seen the Moto X app tray, it looks similar. Asus has added a few tabs at the bottom for All apps, Downloaded apps, and Frequently used apps. The layout of the app icons seems more dense too, meaning more apps per row.

Asus has changed some of the standard icons for built-in apps and replaced them with their own. For example Contacts, Browser, and Calendar has Zen-style icons.

I have noticed that the transitions from landscape to portrait are very quick, yet sometimes there is some lag pulling down the notification shade, and opening the app tray.

Thankfully there is an SD card slot on side. It is exposed and has no cover or door. It seems like it was tacked on to the 2012 Nexus 7 design.

According to the Asus website, there are some nice camera features in the software, but I have yet to locate them. These include Time Rewind figure (records 2 seconds before you push the shutter button and 1 second after), All Smiles Mode (lets you take 5 images and use the best faces/smiles to composite one photo), and Smart Remove (lets you remove unwanted things from photos).

Overall, I reckon this is a nice tablet option for those looking for a solid device at a fantastic price. It reminds me a lot of the 2012 Nexus 7, in size and weight. It has an ok screen, performs well in benchmarks, and feels like a quality device, from a manufacturer whose products I have bought before.

Asus has produced a winner, June 28, 2014

Verified Buy(What’s this?)
The Memo Pad 7 is a fantastic budget when you compare the price with what you get for it. Firstly, this 2014 model of the Asus MeMo Pad 7 has some minor differences form its predecessors, specifically from the 2013 model. The first change is the back material used for the tablet, previous MeMo Pads used a smooth glossy type material but this model comes with a matte type yet smooth plastic material. The camera is also a step down with this model featuring a 2MP rear camera versus a 5MP camera in the previous model.

The device is perfectly designed and is very ergonomic. The tablet feels very nice to hold and does not become uncomfortable after holding for whole periods of time. It is light weight but doesn’t feel cheap at all, it is just small of feeling like a premium build. The edges are smooth and the borders are slim and device has a very futuristic look to it. I do not like the faux silver trim around the outer edge of the device, these tend to rub off after a even as from abrasion and constant touching leaving an hideous appearance. On an overall all basis, the device certainly looks like a tablet from 2014 and unlike some additional tabs that have 2014 domestic components but outdated designs. My only gripe is that I am not a fan of the coloured models. The white and black are nice opposites of the colour spectrum but black front and red or yellow backs models are just plain hideous to me.

It runs and Intel Atom Bay Trail processor. This is something that got me really excited, and for excellent reason. Asus made a huge win by doing this. If you despise slow devices then this is the tablet for you. This tablet is above all as the fastest I have ever owned and/or used. Some huge negatives are is very poor camera quality and the lack of an ambient light sensor. The cameras are grainy in anything additional than perfect lighting conditions, this is not a huge deal as for most people their tablet is not intended to be their main camera. The lack of an ambient light sensor is a bit irritating though as I constantly have to change the screen brightness. This is something has been taken for granted in the past until you don’t have it.

Android 4.4 Kitkat has introduced a lot of performance improvements and matches well with Asus on top Zen UI. The Zen UI this time around has been stuck-up in the way it looks and feels. The Do It Later figure and What’s Next are nice additions, they do things that many additional apps already do but it’s nice to have them included. I personally like the What’s Next figure to see my schedule at a glance.

Asus Shady Business Practices
I am a huge fan of Asus as a technology company, as I do own many Asus products but I have noticed many subtle acts of deception on their part in the marketing of this tablet in particular.
1. On their website, Asus lists the authoritative specs for the camera as “2 MP Front Camera / 5 MP Rear Camera with Auto focus( 1080p Video Recording )”, but Amazon’s listing states “Rear : 2MP; Front : 0.3MP”. Seeing this I plotting that Amazon doubtless made and error as I doubted and wished that Asus would not uses such a low resolution camera from what is considered standard today.
2. Asus claims that the tablet comes with “over $270 worth of make pleased and services”, namely eMusic, Zinio and ASUS WebStorage. I was expecting to open the box and see coupons for these, but none were included. So I checked the apps as I assumed that the offers would already be available, that turned out to not be so either. After some digging I realized that the offers for eMusic and Zinio are offers that are open to all users of the app and are in no way exclusive or part of any agreement with Asus. It was all a clever marketing ploy to make customers reckon they are getting more than what they pay for.

Overall the Asus ME176C is a fantastic tablet and I would recommend it as a main tablet for anyone looking for a 7 inch portable tablet for daily use. It delivers on all grounds, hardware, software and performance.
