Unacceptable picture quality, December 27, 2012

Update: Establish a background that makes the fonts tolerable so I went it from one star to three stars.

Small version:

I sent this monitor back and bought a ViewSonic 27″ monitor. The 27″ monitor is MUCH better and has clearer fonts at accurate to 80 pixels per inch. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008A3KFB8/ref=oh_details_o00_s01_i00

1. You can only get about 60 pixels per inch at 1600×1200 so the fonts are vacant to look grainy. Most monitors give you quicker to 100 pixels per inch (even at lower resolution settings) which is very sharp. That’s why pro monitors are 2560×1600 resolution and cost in the $1000 range.
2. With the picture set to “Full 100%” instead of the default background of “Normal” and using a DVI cable the fonts are not terrible anymore. They are NOT excellent but they are borderline tolerable. I can see pixels and there are a LOT of darkness (light/dark transitions) on every letter. Nothing made the fonts look better when I used a HDMI cable.

This monitor is vacant back to Amazon.

Long unedited version:

I was looking forward to replacing two 22″ monitors with this one. But, when I plugged it in and set the resolution to the recommended background (1920×1080) fonts look terrible. Its so terrible that its hard to read some words. I expected that it might not be as sharp as the smaller monitors running at 1600×1200 but I didn’t expect it to be nearly unusable. I tried every resolution background available and some looked less pixelated but they were very fuzzy. I’m using the digital video output from a dedicated graphics card. The fonts on my additional two monitors look super sharp and pixels are not even noticeable.

I hoped that this issue could be a background problem but I’ve gone through every background I know how to change and nothing has helped. I guess that’s why all the additional 32″ monitors I saw cost over $1000. It may not be possible to make a quality 32″ monitor for $400.

I called ViewSonic and they could not help.

I updated my video card drivers and that didn’t help.

A comment in another review gave me the thought of playing with picture settings.

I get a small better fonts using a DVI cable and then background the “Picture Screen Size” to “Full 100%”. Nothing helps when I use a HDMI cable.

I did the math (which I should have done before I bought the monitor) and it only has 60-70% as many pixels per inch as my additional monitors that run at lower resolutions. (this monitor 70 pixels/inch. Smaller monitors running at lower resolutions 100 pixels/inch) That clarifies the way it looks after I changed to “Full 100%”. The monitor settings will not allow me to edit “PC Settings” when using DVI or HDMI cables. I suppose its possible that if Viewsonic fixes that issue there may be a way to improve it some more.

With the picture set to “Full 100%” instead of the default background of “Normal” and using a DVI cable the fonts are not terrible anymore. They aren’t fantastic but they are tolerable. I can see pixels and there are a LOT of darkness (light/dark transitions) on every letter.

I’ll likely send this one back and get a 27″ monitor. 27″ is doubtless about as large as you can go lacking getting under 80 pixels per inch unless you are willing to spend over $1000 for a high end 32″ monitor and higher resolution video card.

I hope this review helps someone else not make the same mistake I did.

Fantastic huge PC monitor for the price, January 4, 2013

At first, I plotting this must be too excellent to be right – a 32″ PC Monitor for $400. I did some research then got my expectations in line — the pixels per inch would be significantly lower than my standard PC monitors (Dell and HP), Text would be slightly pixelated, etc. In any case, I placed the order. The product indoors three days later. Within a about 40 minutes, I had the monitor hooked up to my HDMI video output from my PC. It took a small extra time in view of the fact that (a) I am slow and (b) I had to fiddle with the buttons on the monitor — cycling through the Input button settings to pick the right video input, otherwise, the “No Signal” image appears on screen. I set this to be my second monitor, replacing an older 24″ variety. Set the resolution to 1920 by 1080 (maximum). Wow. The insignia and details are exceptional. This works fantastic for showing photos and movies (of course), but it is also vastly acceptable as a lesser PC monitor. I am typing in my Amazon review presently from the new Huge Screen. To tell the truth, although the text is pixelated, I can read everything quite easily. This is an outstanding monitor for the price. I may do a small further research to see if the DVI or additional video formats are stuck-up to the HDMI – but for the present, I am a very pleased customer.

Complicated Review, January 3, 2013

This review is from: ViewSonic LED Professional Spectacle CDE3201LED 32-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor (Personal Computers)
After reading the very exceptional and meticulous review at Amazon, I still bought this monitor even though there were some significant concerns expressed. I did not realize it was a TV performing as a monitor. I was thrilled to find a 32″ monitor for that price, but as soon as I saw the remote control I plotting they had sent me the incorrect package. With that said, I hooked it up even as leaving everything in tack so it would be simple to repack and return. When windows came on the screen, it was too huge and went outside the monitor. I have a Nvidia GTX 560 and went into Nvidia’s control panel and changed the PC resolution to the highest level available at 1680 X 1080, and that fixed the problem. I do two things a lot; games and Word. I started with games. First, I ran Dishonered. It was very dark but easily fixed. There is a weigh. My previous 27″ HP was better, but this was more immersive. I mean I nearly giggled. I next ran FarCry 3, and then XCom. The experience was the same. I felt a small tinge of regret because of the image, and yet had a higher in-game experience. Maybe a lot higher. Next came Word. I aptly away saw the font concern. I Augmented the document to 125% and that seemed acceptable. Not excellent, but acceptable. The additional thing that has to be appreciated is a larger screen at a accurate distance is never excellent. Most people do not sit two feet from a 32″ TV. But, you do with a PC. All of this review is with nearly no tinkering. This is an out-of-the box review. I chose pretty quick to keep it. The worse I end up with is a very excellent TV. Even with the PC, the screen can be dramatic, frequently. Especially the commencement of games. Very disappointed that it does not have a tilt figure. PC monitors have to tilt based on how much light is coming into the room. There are mechanical fixes, but that is no excellent. You want as many things running at 1920 X 1080 as possible, and that may be a challenge for some video cards. In a word, it is all about the price.
